How long

How long does mobile dog grooming take?

Most mobile groomers we checked say a visit takes 1 to 3 hours. Here is what changes the time, and how to plan your day.

Short answer: Most mobile grooms take 1 to 3 hours. We read the websites of about 40 mobile groomers we list, and 14 post a time. Most say 1 to 2 hours or 1 to 3 hours. Three say about an hour. A bath-only visit is quicker, and a big, thick, or matted coat takes longer.

What groomers say.

Of the 14 groomers that post a time, 5 say 1 to 2 hours and 3 say 1 to 3 hours. Two say about 2 hours, and one says 1.5 to 3 hours. Three say about an hour, and one of those includes 60 minutes in its price and charges for extra time. None posts a time over 3 hours.

What each step takes.

A vet-reviewed PetMD page says a bath alone takes about 30 to 40 minutes, and drying can take longer. A nail trim takes 10 to 15 minutes for a calm dog. A short coat may need only a 20-minute brush after drying. Thick undercoats need a long blow-out and brushing.

What makes it take longer.

Big dogs, thick double coats, mats, and full haircuts all add time. So do nervous dogs that need breaks. One groomer says a muzzle or a cone can add time too. Ask for a time estimate when you book, and tell the groomer about mats.

Your time, not just the groom time.

With a mobile groom, the van parks outside and the groomer works on one dog at a time. You don’t drive your dog anywhere or wait for a pickup call. Groomers often give an arrival window, since the stop before yours can run long. One groomer we read gives a 3-hour window.

Puppies and first visits.

The AKC says to keep a puppy’s first groom to an hour or less, since a tired puppy won’t enjoy it. A first visit for any nervous dog may be short on purpose, like a bath and nails.
