Holiday dog grooming: when to book before Thanksgiving and Christmas
Want a clean, fluffy dog for the holidays? Groomers get busy in November and December. Here is when to book, and how to keep your dog warm after a winter groom.
Why groomers fill up.
Lots of owners want a groomed dog before family visits and holiday photos. Woofie’s, a mobile pet care company, says November and December book up fast, often weeks ahead. If you have a date in mind, ask your groomer now.
Book your next visit before the groomer leaves.
The easiest way to get a holiday time is to ask for it at the visit before. When your groomer finishes in November, ask them to hold a spot in December.
Keep some coat in winter.
The ASPCA says not to shave your dog down to the skin in winter, because a longer coat keeps a dog warmer. Ask for a trim instead. If your dog has a short cut, the AKC says a dog coat can help on cold walks.
Care for paws after walks.
Ice, salt, and de-icers can hurt paws. The ASPCA says to wash and dry your dog’s paws and belly after winter walks and check for cracks or redness. Ask your groomer to trim the long hair between the toes, so ice and salt don’t clump there.
Thank your groomer.
Many owners tip a bit more at the holidays. Some give up to the cost of one groom, and some give a small gift instead.
